A Note on iBlueYonder P3D4/FSW Compatibility

I just got back from a week of family business to discover that LM has announced the P3D v.4 release will be on May 30th. And of course, the preview of Dovetail’s Flight Sim World is already available on Steam as of May 18. This is great news for the sim community, and we’re really excited about it as well.

However, with any new sim comes the big question: will my existing add-ons work? In the case of Nantucket and The Heron’s Nest, the answer is a temporary no. No, because we rely on third-party technology to provide functionality that even at this stage of sim development isn’t available from the base simulators; things like seasonal texture swapping, conditional animations, and so forth. Temporary because our plan is to upgrade everything we sell to full P3D4/FSW compatibility in the very near future.

When these new compatibility mods appear exactly will depend on the work required and when the the maker of SODE can create a version that works with the new sims. Our requests for development insight and assistance from Lockheed Martin went unanswered, so we’re no more in-the-know than anyone else about how porting to their new P3D will work out. Fortunately, Dovetail were more forthcoming, and we’re working right now on versions of everything for FSW.

In the medium term, have no fear – if you bought one of our airports, your investment is safe. In the short term, all we ask is that you keep whatever sim you’ve been using active on your hard drives until we can work out the new versions, and please be understanding about the time it takes to transition. We’ll do our best to make the gap as short as humanly possible.

Dovetail’s Flight Sim World: First Look!

Dovetail Games rolled out an intriguing video today with some tasty preview tidbits of their upcoming Flight Sim World simulator. As a company dedicated to environmental art, we’re very excited about what we’ll be able to do with this sim. We may not know detailed specifics yet, but one thing we can say is that we will definitely be supporting it in future (and possibly current) projects!

A Great Little Free Plane for Your Free Island

A Great Little Free Plane for Your Free Island post image

I just saw a mention on Facebook from my friend, Flight1 staffer Jeff Smith. Looks like they’ve released their Cessna 162 Skycatcher for free. Jeff pointed out that it’s a great complement to our Heron’s Nest 2.0 scenery.

More info on the free Skycatcher here: http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=skycatcher

And of course for your copy of the Heron’s Nest 2, check out the product page.

Wanted: Beta Testers

It’s that time again. We’re preparing a new version of the Heron’s Nest for release, and find ourselves in need of around five more beta testers. Ideal testers would:

  • Own more than one version of the sim – targets include the original FSX/Acceleration, FSX Steam Edition, and Prepar3D v1, 2, or 3.
  • Have previous testing experience (not absolutely necessary, but nice to have).
  • Take testing seriously, but be willing to have a little fun with it, too.

If this sounds like you, drop me a comment below so we can talk. If you don’t meet the above criteria, but feel you’d be a great tester anyway, let me know that as well.

Thanks to everyone who commented. We’ve got our hands full answering the current list, so I’ve closed this post for future comments.

FSElite Interviews Bill Womack from iBlueYonder

The kind folks at FSElite.com just posted an interview with yours truly on their site. I fear I rambled on a bit, but if you’ve ever been even a little interested in what motivates me (Bill) and how I go about my day, it might be an interesting read. Plus: teasers about our next big announcement, thrown in for good measure! Check it out here: https://fselite.net/developer-month/developer-month-iblueyonder-interview/

Nantucket is Getting Livelier Soon!

One of the challenges of being a small design studio (I like to think of us as “boutique”, because it sounds better) is the creation of assets that larger developers already have lying around on the shelf. For instance, slowly but surely we’re working to bring new, reusable libraries of objects online that will speed development of future projects.  [continue reading…]
