Guess the Airport!
Travel is a fickle beast. Sometimes a trip goes off as planned and you have a great time. Then there are the other times…
I just got back from one of the other times.
My wife and I go to the Boston area every year for a conference she attends. Along the way, we throw in a few days of fun in some other New England locale, just exploring and relaxing a little. Of course it’s not all play–this is also how I find new airports to photograph for potential FS scenery projects. Back in 2008, Plum Island was one of my big finds. Last year, I photographed Minuteman Air Field in Stow, MA and Miller’s Field in Bangor, ME.
This year, things were almost a washout. The weather in Massachusetts, to put it bluntly, sucked. Which is to say, it was a carbon copy of the chilly continuous rain we left behind in Oregon. On top of that, I got a cold from the plane ride and it really clobbered me. Fortunately, I caught a couple of tiny breaks in the weather and was able to medicate myself enough to get up out of bed and go shooting. The result was that I bagged two very nice Massachusetts airports that will definitely make their way into FSX.
Here’s a really cool old hangar from one of them. Can you guess the airport? Leave a comment below if you think you know which one it is. Hint: you really can get a burger at this one.
Dain Arns got it! The answer is…
Here’s another view. How could I say no to hangars with this kind of character?

Man, you have me stumped on this one. I don’t do a whole lot of flying in the NE so I’m totally unfamiliar with the area.
I too do not have a clue. If I am reading the wording right, It looks like the building used to sale and service Piper aircraft many years ago.
Yeah, I love the ghosted lettering on the hangar. In fact, I found a bunch of great old rusty hulks on this field that will look dynamite in FS. That is, if you like derelict old hangars
.
You got all of us. I didn’t know, so sent the photo out to all my flying buddies and also my brother. They collectively have hit every airport in New England. Where this derelict old Piper Sales and Service is located has to be out of the area,
I hope one of the places in disrepair will find itself in Emma Field.. You can’t make the place too neat.
Not as out of the area as you might think, Bob. In fact, it’s only an hour or two’s drive by buggy from your front door!
I will say Presqu’Isle, Maine?
Fitchburg Municipal
WE HAVE A WINNER! Are you a local, Dain? Nice job.
Nope. Living in South Dakota.
Have this weird talent I guess. =)
That’s not fair. – Nobody goes to Fitchburg unless their hiding out from the law or they have performed an indecent act in front of the State House.
You can’t get from Beverly to Fitchburg, they have laws against it.
That’s not fair.
Bob
blah, blah, blah…
Just this morning, I took my Archer from your Plum Island to Marshfield KGHG. Nice flight out over Cape Cod Bay. It was a quite hazy. Then I found your blog about Fitchburg KFIT and left KGHG and fought the haze a little west of Boston to find my way to FIT….Yes, that FSX airport really needs you, as do most of the East coast gems. There is a lot of really fun and scenic flying out here, I sure hope someone notices and does New England.
And Bob F …I think you are right about the laws here in Mass
Tom
I think one of the reasons there aren’t many NE add-ons is that sim fliers seem to have a bias toward mountainous areas. They’re more dramatic, to be sure, but I really enjoy the topography of the Northeast as well. My goal right now is to put together a “fall color” package for FSX that includes a couple of New England airports and some enhanced terrain between them, plus some reworked tree textures to really bring out the glory of a NE autumn.
Looking good again Bill… so does the new Blog
F.
Thank you, sir!
